Stallergenes has announced that the sublingual desensitization tablet for allergic rhinitis caused by exposure to dust mites has been given the following brand name:
« ACTAIR® »
The brand name ACTAIR® alludes to both the allergen in question (“Ac” for “acarid”, which is the scientific term for mites, derived from the Latin “acari”), and the respiratory system (“air” for “airways”). It also indicates that this pharmaceutical product is part of Stallergenes’ STALAIR® development program.
The STALAIR® development program has been designed to develop EBM-documented, registered sublingual desensitization tablets, based on allergens that cater for the unmet medical needs of patients suffering from moderate to severe allergic rhinitis and rhinoconjunctivitis, not controlled by their usual medical treatment. This program consists in the development of 5 tablets for the main allergens triggering more than 80% of allergies: grass pollens, house dust mites, birch pollen, ragweed pollen and Japanese cedar pollen.
To date, the STALAIR® program includes 13 phase I to III clinical trials, 7 of which have already been completed and 6 of which are currently underway. Its clinical development is proceeding according to schedule. These trials have included a total of 5000 patients.
The first product resulting from this program – the ORALAIR® sublingual tablet for grass pollen desensitization – has been marketed in Germany in adult indications since September 2008 and in pediatric indications since January 2009. A mutual recognition procedure enabling to register this product in most European countries is undergoing.
